ASTM A182 F22 Alloy Steel Forging Guide | YAJIADA

What Is ASTM A182 F22?

F22 is a 2.25Cr-1Mo low-alloy steel forging in ASTM A182. It is the standard Cr-Mo grade for the hottest oil-refinery and hydrogen-service piping, offering high creep strength and resistance to high-temperature oxidation.

Temperature Range

Rated up to 538°C in the ASME B16.5 pressure-temperature tables.

Material Group (per ASME B16.5)

Per ASME B16.5-2025 Table 1A, A182 Gr. F22 Class 3 (2.25Cr-1Mo) belongs to Material Group 1.10.

Corrosion Resistance

Like F11, F22 is selected for elevated-temperature strength and scaling resistance, not aqueous corrosion (no separate alloy-steel row in the Schweitzer tables; treat like carbon steel for wet corrosion). For sour service consult NACE/ISO guidance and specify the appropriate heat treatment.

Typical Applications

  • Hydroprocessing and refinery high-temperature flanges and fittings
  • Reformer and heater piping components
  • ASME B16.5 and B16.47 flanges for hot, high-pressure service

FAQ

What temperature range does F22 cover?

Up to 538°C per the ASME B16.5 Group 1.10 tables.

Where is F22 used?

The hottest refinery circuits: hydrotreaters, reformers, heater tubes and associated high-pressure flanges.

Is F22 suitable for sour service?

Not automatically — sour service requires controlled hardness and per-NACE material selection; send us your service conditions for confirmation.

F22 vs F11?

F22 has higher chromium and molybdenum, hence higher allowable stress at temperature; F11 is the economical alternative for milder hot service.

Can F22 be welded?

Yes, but Cr-Mo forgings require controlled preheat and post-weld heat treatment per the welding procedure to achieve the specified mechanical properties.
