What Is ASTM A182 F316L?
F316L is the low-carbon version of the F316 molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless forging (16Cr-12Ni-2Mo, restricted carbon). It combines the chloride resistance of 316 with post-weld intergranular corrosion resistance.
Temperature Range
Rated up to 538°C. Like other low-carbon grades it carries the lower Group 2.3 pressure-temperature rating — verify the allowable pressure at your design temperature.
Material Group (per ASME B16.5)
Per ASME B16.5-2025 Table 1A, F316L belongs to Material Group 2.3, together with F304L and F317L.
Corrosion Resistance
Same chloride and pitting resistance as F316 (Schweitzer tables, Type 316/316 L row: excellent to good in most media). The low carbon level protects the weld heat-affected zone from intergranular attack — the reason to specify it for welded flanges, fittings and vessels.
Typical Applications
- Welded stainless flanges and fittings for chemical and marine piping
- Welded vessels, heat-exchanger components and tubing
- Applications where F316 performance is needed but post-weld annealing is not done

FAQ
When should I specify F316L instead of F316?
For welded components: the low carbon prevents carbide precipitation in the weld HAZ, so the part stays corrosion-resistant without solution annealing.
Is F316L pressure-rated lower than F316?
Yes — B16.5 places F316L in Group 2.3 (lower strength curve) versus F316 in Group 2.2.
What temperature range does F316L cover?
Up to 538°C per the ASME B16.5 Group 2.3 tables.
Is F316L better than 304?
In chloride and marine service, yes — the molybdenum content is the deciding factor; in purely oxidizing media the difference is smaller.
Can F316L be used up to 538°C?
Yes — Group 2.3 ratings in ASME B16.5 extend to 538°C, with allowable pressure declining as temperature rises.
