Ring Type Joint Gasket
Product Description
Solid metal ring gasket for RTJ flanges, providing metal-to-metal sealing for the most demanding high-pressure and high-temperature services.
Available in all standard sizes and pressure classes, with custom dimensions per drawing. Each gasket is marked per standard requirements for full traceability.
Applications
Ring Type Joint (RTJ) gaskets are solid metal rings that seal by metal-to-metal contact in machined flange grooves. They are the definitive sealing solution for the highest pressure and temperature services in oil and gas production, deepwater pipelines, and refinery hydroprocessing units, reliably containing pressures from Class 600 through Class 2500 and temperatures from -29°C to 450°C with carbon or soft iron rings.
Primary applications include wellhead Christmas tree connections, subsea pipeline flange joints, high-pressure gas gathering manifolds, and refinery reactor loop flanges. The metal ring deforms under bolt load to conform to the groove geometry, creating a leak-tight seal that outperforms soft gaskets in fire-safe and blowout-prevention critical service.
Standard oval and octagonal ring types (R, RX, BX series) are available per ASME B16.20 RJ-1 tables. Stainless SS316 rings handle corrosive sour service and seawater injection up to 600°C in non-oxidizing conditions. Monel and Inconel rings are used for hydrogen fluoride and extreme temperature refinery duty.
Quality Assurance & Certification
RTJ gaskets are precision-machined from certified bar stock to ASME B16.20 Part RJ dimensions, with groove angle, ring height, and surface finish held to tight tolerances. Hardness is controlled to be softer than the flange material per Table RJ-3.2 (e.g., 90 HB max soft iron, 120 HB max carbon steel). We supply EN 10204 3.1 certificates with hardness test reports.
Each ring is hardness-tested individually and marked with material grade, ring number, and manufacturer identity per ASME B16.20 RJ-4. Dimensional inspection includes ring groove contact face geometry. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, or TUV can witness hardness verification and material traceability review for subsea and wellhead orders.
RTJ rings are coated with anti-rust oil, individually wrapped in greaseproof paper, and packed in wooden or sturdy cardboard boxes. They must be handled carefully to avoid nicks on the sealing surfaces. Each package is labeled with ring number, material, hardness, heat number, and quantity for proper inventory control.
ASME Standard Data
Dimensions for ring-type-joint (RTJ) gaskets, Type R, transcribed from ASME B16.20-2023, Part RJ, Table RJ-5-1. Units are mm (inches). Columns: P = Average Pitch Diameter; A = Width of Ring; B = Height (oval); H = Height (octagonal); C = Width of Flat on Octagonal; R1 = Radius in Octagonal Ring. The complete ring-number range in the standard is R-11 through R-105 (R-83 is not present in the original table; the sequence jumps from R-82 directly to R-84). Below, representative ring numbers covering the B16.5 NPS 1/2–24 and B16.47 large-diameter range are shown, followed by the R-93–R-101 large-diameter subset. Flange ring-groove dimensions (groove depth E, groove width F, etc.) are given in ASME B16.5 (Tables 5 / 5C) and B16.47, not in B16.20; B16.20 specifies only the ring gasket itself.

Source: ASME B16.20-2023, Part RJ, Table RJ-5-1 (Type R). Representative ring numbers across the B16.5 NPS 1/2–24 and B16.47 large-diameter range; “…” denotes no oval height listed in the standard for that ring. Full range R-11–R-105 (R-83 absent per original).
2. Type R Ring Gasket Dimensions — Table RJ-5-1 (mm / in.) — Large-Diameter R-93 through R-101
Source: ASME B16.20-2023, Part RJ, Table RJ-5-1. R-99 does not exist in the standard (the sequence in the original table runs R-98 directly to R-100). R-102/R-103/R-104/R-105 exist in the standard but are beyond the scope of this product page; contact us for those dimensions.
